Oscars Challenge: Lady Bird

The second coming-of-age film in the Best Picture race is Lady Bird.

Director, Greta Gerwig’s work follows Christine “Lady Bird” MacPhearson (Saorise Ronan) as she navigates senior year at her Catholic high school. Lady Bird doesn’t like much that is going on in her life right now. Her family lives paycheck-to-paycheck. Her nagging mom (brilliantly portrayed by Laurie Metcalf) is annoying. Her high school is boring. She doesn’t even know if she will get into the college she wants.

In the little more than 90-minute runtime, we go through a roller coaster of emotions. We also see how our main character handles the growing pains that often come with transitioning into adulthood. Ronan is unequivocally radiant as the contempt-for-her-life Lady Bird. She is also most definitely a dark horse for Best Leading Actress, as is Lady Bird for Best Picture.
